Issue No. 3 of

Salt: Crossroads of Religion and Culture on “Peace”

“Blessed are the peacemakers,

for they will be called the Sons of God.” (Mt 5:9)

We are pleased to announce a call for papers for the forthcoming Issue Nr. 3 of Salt: Crossroads of Religion and Culture. The central theme will be “Peace”, and we invite submissions that explore this theme through the lens of our journal’s vision of Orthodox cross-cultural theology, dialogue, and mission.

Our world is beset by existential crises—geo-political, humanitarian, economic, technological, and environmental—often with global repercussions. Wars continue to rage, devastating countless lives, including those of many Orthodox Christians in Gaza, Ukraine, Russia, and other traditionally Orthodox regions. Recent conflicts have also deepened fractures within global Orthodoxy. The moral framework underlying various interpretations of just war theory—more prevalent in the West than in the East, where war is traditionally seen as a tragic necessity—seems elusive at best, if not entirely eroded within international diplomacy.

A key aspect of our vision statement (Salt Vision) is to “raise vital questions and increase self-awareness” in order to “address the needs of the 3rd millennium.” With this issue, we aim to curate a collection of critical reflections on the conditions, ideologies, and actions that contribute to war or foster peace. Our hope is that Salt, Issue Nr. 3 will serve as a meaningful contribution to peacebuilding.

Submission Topics

We welcome articles that interpret the Gospel in contemporary contexts, engage with patristic thought and Orthodox tradition, and critically dialogue with modernity, including scholars from various disciplines, Christians of different traditions, people of other faiths or ideologies, and those affected by war.

When war erupts, human rights vanish, human dignity survives only through personal resolve or sacrifice, and truth is always the first casualty. In light of this framing, we invite submissions on topics such as:

  • Theology and Peace: Biblical and patristic perspectives, Orthodox teachings on peace
  • Dialogue & Conflict Resolution: Interreligious and intercultural approaches
  • Justice, Power, and War: Ethical, financial, and political dimensions of conflict
  • Truth and Reconciliation: Historical and contemporary case studies
  • Personal Narratives: Experiences of war, trauma, and recovery
  • Post-Conflict Peacebuilding: The role of the Church, canon law, and social reconstruction

We also welcome book reviews and articles on other topics, which will be considered at the discretion of the Editorial Board.
