Witnesses of the Resurrection: Orthodox Mission in the Contemporary World
With the aim of encouraging a broader conversation within the Orthodox churches on the theme of Christian witness in today’s world, the IOTA Missiology Group is organizing a series of webinars with speakers who can draw on their scholarly research and practical experience of mission to respond to the challenges and complexities of different contexts and cultures around the globe. After each webinar’s presentation(s) there will be time for questions and discussion.

Fr Cristian Sonea, ‘Trends and Challenges in Contemporary Romanian Orthodox Missiology’
Fr Cristian is a priest and Professor of Orthodox Missiology at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology, Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania. After outlining major trends in Romanian Orthodox missiological studies over the last one hundred years, he will focus on the challenges that contemporary Orthodox missions studies must respond to.

Orthodox Mission in East Africa: a Discussion between Rev. Dr. Anastasios Kihali (Kenya) and Dr. Evangelia Voulgaraki (Greece)
Archimandrite Anastasios Elekiah Andago Kihali is a priest in the Diocese of Nyeri and Mount Kenya and Director of St Paul’s Orthodox School, Godjope Hills, Kenya. As well as holding a PhD in Missiology from Thessaloniki, Greece, he has had extensive experience of mission in Albania, Mexico and Africa. He is the author of two recent books including ‘The Orthodox Christian Witness in East Africa: Historical, Ecclesiological and Theological Approach’ published in 2020.
Dr Evangelia Voulgaraki is a Lecturer in Missiology at the Department of Social Theology and Religious Studies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. Alongside her extensive publications on Orthodox missiology, she has recently founded and is Editor-in-Chief of the journal SALT: An Orthodox Journal of Cross-Cultural Theology, Dialogue and Mission. Her presentation will draw on her research and practical experience of Orthodox mission in Africa.
